Photo of Washington, DC - City Of Trees
-- The rotunda of the Capitol building in Washington, DC, framed by trees.
In the late 19th century Washington came to be known as the City of Trees, and that nickname still holds true. The city's design by French engineer Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant called for grand, broad avenues emanating from the Capitol building, as well as abundant tree groves, parks, and open spaces.
