Image of Southeastern Lubber Grasshopper
-- There is no mistaking this two-inch long grasshopper. The adults are yellowish with black markings, and they have a red cast to their wings. Eighty or more eggs can be laid in the ground anytime from June to August. The eggs hatch in 90 to 120 days. The young are black with red or yellow lines. After hatching, the young can be seen traveling like a small army across Florida roadways. Both the young and the adults feed on a variety of plants. Adults have been seen eating other already dead lubbers. Their life may span up to one year.
