-- The former glittering Republic of Ragusa, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Dubrovnik has long attracted visitors. For such a tiny place Dubrovnik has a fascinating history. Although its fortunes rose and fell along with those of the powerful neighbouring empires to whom it owed allegiance, it managed to retain a degree of autonomy and to steer its own course. While its defensive walls suggest that it was a city that could not be taken by force, in truth it was more often diplomacy and pragmatism that enabled Dubrovnik to retain its independence and to prosper economically.
