-- Rostov the Great is one of the oldest cities in Russia,first mentioned in chronicles in 862. In 1207, Rostov became a principality and in 1474, it became a religious center for people. The Rostov Kremlin, which is one of the most impressive monuments of the Golden Ring cities, was built as the Metropolitan's residence. The Kremlin includes 5 churches, palaces and estates. Also include is the and the Church of Saviour with the golden stars on bright-blue domes. The Church of Ascension stands a bit away from the line. There are two convents located on the banks of Nero lake to the left and to the right of the Kremlin: the St. Abraham Convent to the north-east and Yakovlevsky Convent to the south-west. and the Bell Tower (1682-1687). The largest Rostov bell weighs 32,000 kg and the sound of its chimes can be heard at the distance of 20 km from town.
Rostov's Kremlin was placed on the UNESC list of World Heritage sites Oct 22, 1998.
