Photo of Dubrovnik Clock Tower And Croatian Flag
-- Elegant Bell [Clock] Tower, 35m tall, dating from 1444 can be seen on the right side. On the left behind the Croatian flag is the Sponza Palace. It is said to hold 7000 volumes and over 100.000 individual manuscripts from the Republic. The oldest Archive dates to 1072! Againn this is a Gothic-Renaissance combo like other of Dubros facades. It was known for most of its life as 'the Customs house'. Fittingly the name Sponza derives from the word for sponge-as it was here the the water was collected from the alluvial deposits.
