Photograph of Alcazar, Segovia
-- The Alcazar is a fortress on top of a cliff overlooking the confluence of rivers Eresma and Clamores and the access to the medieval walled city of Segovia, in Spain. Built in the12th century, remodelled in the 15th century and reconstructed after a fire in the 19th century, it was the residence of the kings of Castile, and later a prison and a military school. It was here that Isabel - later the patroness of Columbus trip to the New World - was proclaimed Queen of Castile. This unique castle mixes gothic and romanesque styles, with some moorish influence in the interior, and its towers remind us of fairytarle castles.
The old city of Segovia, with the Alcazar, the Cathedral and the Roman Aqueduct, was nominated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
