May 29, 1953: The first men to ascend to Everest's summit
On 29th May, 1953, after three decades of attempts, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing
Norgay become the first men to stand on Mt. Everest's summit. By the 50th
anniversary of the ascent in May 2003 over 1,300 people had reached the
summit at the roof of the world.
The height of Mount Everest has been determined to be 8,850 meters (29,035
feet). Scientific surveys completed in the early 1990s supported evidence that
Everest is the highest mountain in the world. In fact, the mountain is rising a
few millimeters each year due to geological forces. http://encarta.msn.com
