detailed description
: The largest water lily in the world is the Vitoria Regia Victoria amazonica , a native of the Amazon River basin. Its round leaves may reach 2m in diameter and have a raised and pricky edge. When floating on the water it can sustain heavy weights, such as small animals. When it blooms, its petals are white and pink, opening during the day and closing at night. Its name is a tribute to the British Queen Victoria.
The Amazon is a very delicate environment and many projects are trying to preserve it. Sales profits from this image will be sent to a preservation fund.
