: Altar prepared by the people of Sanarate, El Progreso, Guatemala, during the processions commemorating the Holy Week and Easter. Holy week is commemorated in a very special way in Sanarate, Guatemala, and a weeklong of religious activities leads up to easter. The celebration is actually a combination of Christian beliefs and ancient Mayan traditions. The annual celebrations, were brought to Guatemala by the Spaniards, who had conquered the region in 1524. It is well known that The Spaniards converted the native Maya to Christianity and introduced the Catholic religion.
