Galapagos, Microsolar Distance Learning Initiative, and ... Love!

Galapagos is a fantastic place with the historical significance of being the place with such unusual plants and animals that Darwin began to understand how species evolve and change over time. Most of those creatures are still there because until the mid 20th century the islands remained largely unpopulated. Now four of the islands are inhabited, and our destination was Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Isla San Cristbal, Capitol of Galapagos.

On that first trip we stayed three weeks, during which we installed a server in the local Electric Company, ElecGalapagos, S.A., and planned the rest of our project.

Over the next year I returned to Galapagos four more times, and while there fell in love with the lovely Luisa.

We were married during my fifth visit; we also bought a very small house there, cleaned it up, and moved in.

I am leaving Thursday on my ninth visit, mostly to see my family there, but also to perform some essential maintenance on equipment we installed there.

solar project on Galapagos During those first five trips (and the next three) we installed wireless internet connections at a San Cristobal High School and Hospital and implemented a Community Service program at that High School. We also installed internet connectivity in a High School on Santa Cruz Island. We helped train the High School computer teachers in both schools, and helped ElecGalapagos staff with various technical issues. And we connected monitoring equipment to the seven diesel generators that supply all of the power to Isal San Cristobal, and recorded the results at one of our web sites: http://rmeter.com.

Our sponsor was The E7, http://www.e7.org/index.htm, and much of our work there was in support of their goals for Galapagos. Their work is finally starting to bear fruit as can be seen by the formal announcement of a contract for the long awaited wind power project, designed to reduce the risk of spilling diesel fuel in that pristine water: Galapagos Joint Venture Signature.

Beginning in March or April 2006 we will be installing two or more additional small solar generating demonstrations at schools in San Cristobal. As part of the installation we will train the ElecGalapagos staff in the installation and maintenance of these systems so they will be able to carry on independently.
